Sound really clever guys over at the MIT Media Lab have developed a Google Chrome extension that allows you to browse the web through the use of the Xbox Kinect. The Xbox Kinect has this week toppled sales of over 1 million units. A figure that must have Microsoft grinning like a cheshire cat. The strong initial sales suggest that the Kinect is sure to be a big hit this Christmas and quite possibly a sell-out!

A spokesperson from Microsoft said “They are well on their way to the 5 million sold units mark” they set themselves before the end of the year. They also added they will be working hard with retailers to supplement demand and ensure that the Kinect doesn’t become gold dust before the festive period.

Zavvi originally Virgin Megastores was a highstreet music retailer. Entering administration in 2008. In March of 2009 the Zavvi name was purchased by thehut group and relaunched solely in an online marketplace.

Ease of use
Zavvi came out pretty high in this test against our other retailers. It was very easy to find the products we were looking for and provided some very useful features such as the ability to buy a product without actually having to go into the product detail page.

Overall Price
Zavvi came out pretty poor in the pricing test. Although they undercut the RRP on most items its not by much.

Delivery
Zavvi is run out of the same place as thehut.com so it fared pretty well in our delivery test. Most items offered FREE delivery and the time taken to deliver items was pretty prompt!

Stock
Again, Zavvi is run by the guys at thehut.com so did have some items out of stock in our test but this was mainly very popular products in the sale. Other products seemed to be in stock which is always good to see!

Security
Zavvi got highmarks from us for security. In order to complete a purchase you need to create an account and all purchases are done on a secure url for 100% confidence.

Overview

Based in Cheshire UK thehut.com started up in 2005. Originally started up to server major e-commerce stores such as ASDA’s online presence they decided to launch their own individual online store and have been growing ever since.

Ease of use

In this test thehut.com came out on top as one of our favourites for being so easy to use. The general layout of the website is very good and made it nice and simple for us to find the products we were looking for in 3 clicks or less.

Overall Price

thehut.com probably doesn’t have as much buying power as other retailers on our list so didn’t rank great in our pricing test. Although they do undercut RRP’s slightly they don’t as much as we would like. However, they do offer some great savings on sale items.

Delivery

ASDA is one of the UK’s biggest supermarkets and is owned by US based Walmart. Focusing on food they also sell a range of products including home, electrical, toys and a clothing range called George.

Ease of use

In our test we found it a little difficult to find what we wanted quick. Some items seemed to be placed under categories that we would not immediately associate with it. Once we were in the relevant category it took around 3-4 clicks to get to the product we wanted.

Overall Price

ASDA is typically great value for money and they build their brand around this. Athough, these savings seem to only really come into fruition on food rather than consumer goods. We found the Xbox Kinect was cheap at £127.00 but not as cheap as we would like to find it from a brand that sells itself on value for money.

Delivery

Delivery from ASDA was also a little expensive. It’s £4.95 for any standard item and it states that these items would be delivered within 4 working days which is much longer than we would expect. In our test though all items seemed to turn up in half that time.

Stock

ASDA being the big brand it is can purchase a lot of stock at a time and this normally means that stock is always healthy and readily available.

Security

The security in ordering on ASDA Direct seems pretty good to us. You’ll need a account to checkout any products and all purchasing is secured using geotrust for a secure purchase.

Overview

Argos is the largest general goods retailer in the UK. Argos is a major highstreet band and is unique by selling most of their goods through a catalog and online. Allowing their customers to make the purchase then collect in store.

Ease of use

In our test we found it very easy to search for and find what we were looking for on their website. Usually within 2 clicks. This is made so easy through their mult-layer main navigation that simply displays categories and sub-categories.

Overall Price

In our price comparison Argos fared very well. Their ethos is built around big products at good value and this is echoed in the prices on their website.

Delivery

Delivery from Argos is very good and prompt. Although, it was a little more expensive than other retailers in our list with a standard delivery price of £5.95. Saying that, you are able to reserve a product online and go and pick it up same day at your local Argos highstreet store for most things.

Stock

Argos is always good at keeping the latest products in stock and available throughout their online stores and in their high street stores. Giving you two options if one is out of stock. Great for when you just can’t wait!

Security

As with all our top online retailers Argos gets full marks for their security. All purchases are made through a secure url insuring all your sensitive details are kept secure at all times.

Overview

Amazon.co.uk is the UK’s favourite music and video retailer and 3rd largest online retailer in the UK. Originating from Seattle in the US, Amazon has grown massively since launching as an online book retailer in 1995 and now sells pretty much every product you can think of that can be delivered to your door!

Ease of use

In our test we found it a little more difficult to quickly get to the products we were looking for through the navigation due to its sheer size there are generally more sub-categories than usual and all the products we wanted could fit into more than one of those categories.

Having said that, once we knew which sub-category we were looking for we could easily find the products we wanted sometimes in less than two clicks. Amazon seemed to be very good at promoting and highlighting current trend products like the Xbox Kinect.

Overall Price

In our price comparison test Amazon came out on top of all our other retailers. Again, due to their sheer size they are able to buy in volume and pass that saving onto the customer. They also integrate third party sellers into their products. So often you are able to get some products that are used for a smaller price than they advertise as new.

Delivery

Amazon are super quick at delivery! Often even for the FREE super saver delivery it takes less than 2 days to arrive in easy access locations in the UK. They also offer a wide variety of other delivery options to get your order to you as fast as possible!

Stock

In our test we found Amazon came out on top of our in-stock ratio. Because they incorporate third party sellers too, if the product is out of stock at amazon they can often point you to another seller that does have it in stock. Meaning that you always get the product when you want it.

Security

Amazon is at the forefront of online retailer security. They have had many years of getting this right and ensure that all transactions are done over a secure url that will 100% keep all your sensitive details private.

Overview

Originally Littlewoods Direct, Very.co.uk was re-launched in July 2009 to appeal to a younger audience. Focusing primarily on fashion Very.co.uk also caters for a whole range of goods that can be purchased online including, clothing, sports equipment, home furniture, electrical, entertainment, jewelery, toys and a selection of seasonal goods.

Ease of use

In our test we found the website really easy to search for products we wanted. For example we wanted to find all Xbox 360 related products. To do this all we did was click on the ‘toys’ section on the main navigation then click ‘gaming’ in the sub-navigation and then selected ‘Xbox 360′ from the category menu on the left hand side, making it the magical 3 clicks to get to what we wanted.

If you know the exact name of the product you want to find then the search option found in the header on every page seemed to work quite well for us. We give Very.co.uk full marks for ease of use.

Overall Price

In our price comparison test Very.co.uk came out around average. Most products we did a comparison with came out level pecking with other major online retailers. Although, Very.co.uk offer some great deals every now and then. You can also get big discounts on most products if you sign up for their credit account. For example the Xbox Kinect priced at £129.00 can be purchased for £114.00 if you pay for it through their credit account. Which you can pay off in full at the end of the month if you so wish. The only downside with this is their credit account application is not as easy and straightforward as we would hope.

Delivery

Very.co.uk offer next day delivery on all their items for £3.95. They also offer a range of different delivery options if you want to specify a date and/or time for your products to arrive at your delivery address in which full details can be found here: very.co.uk delivery information. They also offer FREE returns which means if your not happy with the product and want to send it back you want incur any fees.

Stock

We found that all the products we searched for always seemed to be in stock at very.co.uk. Being part of the Littlewoods brand means that they can keep large stock at all times which means you won’t have to hang around waiting for things to come back in stock.

Security

As with most large online retailers security is at upper most importance for them to insure that their customers have a safe and secure environment in which to allow them to enjoy their shopping experience online. All purchases on Very.co.uk have to be done through setting up an account with them. They also transfer you to a secure url when entering the checkout process.
